April 30th is an important day for all pet lovers. It’s National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day!

On this day, we raise awareness of all the animals still living in shelters, waiting for their forever family to adopt them and give them another chance at the kind of life they all deserve.

Did you know that every year, more than 6.5 million animal companions end up in shelters

And the thing is, it’s never the pets’ fault. One of the most common reasons is not being able to handle the responsibility of taking care of a grown-up animal, which results in giving them up at first sight of a challenge.

Most surrenders are due to various lifestyle changes, such as:

  • Separation
  • New family member
  • Loss of a job
  • Health difficulties

Having a pet is a serious responsibility. If you’re thinking of getting one for the first time, make sure to volunteer, foster, or do extensive research on the effort, time, and finances a pet requires. Otherwise, they might become another unfortunate statistic.

Additionally, unless you’re a professional breeder, it is essential to spay or neuter your furry companion.

It helps decrease the number of unwanted pets and unnecessary euthanasias. Sadly, around 625,000 pets were euthanized in 2019 due to not being adopted.

There are many benefits to adopting a furry friend:

  • You’re saving a life
  • By adopting and not shopping, you’re also saving money
  • Pets improve your health and quality of life
  • Unconditional love

Wonder how you can help? Visit your local shelter and be open to adopting. They’ve got all types, sizes, ages, and personalities, all hoping to find a forever home. You will change a pet’s life, and they will definitely change yours too.

Finally, we should mention that April 30th is also National Therapy Animal Day and National Tabby Day. So, whichever day you choose to celebrate, you can do so by showering your pet with plenty of attention.
