Today is April 11, National Pet Day, when we celebrate all the pets and all the love and care they bring into our lives.
National Pet Day has been celebrated since 2006 when it was founded by Colleen Paige, a Pet Lifestyle Expert. She founded National Pet Day to raise awareness of just how many animals live in shelters with no family and to encourage people to adopt more.
And although the number of animals in the shelters has been decreasing in recent years, there are still around 6 million new pets in the US shelters each year.
So, if you can, the best way to celebrate this holiday is to take at least one pet from your local shelter and make them a part of your family. You’ll help the overcrowded shelters and get a friend for life.
If you already have a pet, use this day to give it some extra love and attention. There are many things you can do on this day to show them just how much they mean to you:
- Buy them a new quality toy and play with them.
- Take them for a longer walk, and spend more time with them.
- Take them to the vet to ensure they’re healthy.
- Buy them some healthy treats.
And if you don’t have a pet and can’t take in one, you can always help by donating food, blankets, some money, or your time to your local shelter.
No matter which way you choose to celebrate, this National Pet Day should all be about returning at least a little bit of love we all get from our pets.
