The worldwide pet food packaging market reached the value of $9.92 billion in 2020. This number is expected to rise by 6.79% in the period from 2021 to 2026. In 2026, the pet food packaging market will supposedly reach $13.78 billion.

The numbers are nothing shocking. The statistics show that over 67% of all households in America have a pet. Each year, these pet owners spend over $95 billion on their pets. And this is only the US.

However, from the beginning of the pandemics in 2020, the demand for pet food has gone sky-high. Pet owners are buying more and more pet products with a focus on food and treats.

The increasing demand for pet food leads to the growth of the pet packaging market.

Pet food packages with clear information and those that keep the food or treats fresh were in the highest demand. This is because owners take care of their pets’ health more, and packages have to follow.

Also, from 2019, and especially during 2020, many households with higher incomes decided on pet adoption. This led to the larger premium pet food and packaging market. The premium market is expected to grow by 4.1% each year from 2022–2026.

Another prominent trend in the pet packaging industry is sustainable packaging.

Statistics show that 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic were created in the last 60 years. So, it’s reasonable that people are looking for a more sustainable solution.

Pet food packaging is mostly plastic — plastic pouches have become extremely popular in recent years. But the statistics show that there is a trend of buying products that have sustainable packaging and ingredients.

Among pet owners, 18–29-year-olds lead the game in sustainability shopping. A whopping 73% were willing to pay more if the product is sustainable.

This led many companies to start their journey towards sustainability, with many swearing to have completely sustainable packages and ingredients by 2025.
